The Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) is the representative organization of graduate and professional students at the University of Arizona. In addition to serving as the representative body for graduate and professional students, the GPSC also seeks to tangibly enhance students’ lives. The GPSC achieves this goal not only by providing a platform for communication and interaction between students but also by finding, managing, and disbursing funds for a variety of academic advancement opportunities.
The organization is celebrating 24 years this year. The organization was founded in 1991 by a group of graduate students that were looking for increased advocacy on issues that affected graduate students on the University of Arizona campus. The mission of the organization is, “To promote the academic, economic, and social aims of the graduate and professional students of the University of Arizona. To establish effective communication among graduate students and professional students and finally, to facilitate communication within the University and with other organizations.”
Over the last two decades the organization has become very successful at advocating for students within the University and at the Federal, State and local levels. The organization has established many services that are imperative to graduate student success. Among these services are travel grants, research and project grants, childcare grants, club and POD grants, the GPSC workshops series and events throughout the year. GPSC’s flagship events include the Graduate Student Orientation, Showcase, Grad Slam and many smaller social events.
None of this would be possible without the passion and dedication of our amazing student leaders. The GPSC is comprised of Representatives from each of the 16 colleges (elected by students within those colleges), an Executive Board elected by the Representatives of the council and five GA’s that lead our travel grants, research and project grants and events programs. The council is supported by two professional staff members that include a Program Coordinator and an Administrative Assistant. The council also has the full support of the entire staff of the Student Governance and Programs team and the greater Dean of Students team. This academic year will bring many changes to the organization and both the students and the staff are incredibly excited and ready to get to work!
