Message from the Dean

As we move towards the completion of the fall semester students face a plethora of emotions. These emotions run the gamut, from the stress of upcoming finals, to the prospect of not receiving the grade they set out to earn, to family issues or to the excitement of having a month away from studies. The Dean of Students Office encourages faculty, staff and peers to help their students/friends who find themselves overwhelmed during this time by directing them to campus resources geared at helping students facing these issues. The following resources are available to help students succeed when facing challenging situations.

  • Program Coordinator for Student Assistance & Advocacy - Erin Good works to assist students facing complex issues and crisis
  • Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) - offers psychological counseling and psychiatric services to students to help them cope with personal problems so that they can successfully achieve their educational goals.
  • Friend 2 Friend – Campus Health’s website which provides students a place to get information and advice that they can use to help a friend who might be experiencing problems.
  • the Think Tank - home of the Writing Center, Math and Science tutoring, Spanish tutoring, weekly course reviews, Supplemental Instruction, and Peer Mentoring.
In addition to student resources, the Campus Health Service has several professionals trained as instructors for the QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) program, a pro-active suicide prevention program. With suicide the #2 cause of death in college students, this program teaches those in a position to recognize the signs, clues, and suicidal communications of people in trouble to act vigorously to prevent a possible tragedy. Training is available for departments, teams, groups, etc. and can be scheduled by contacting Lee Ann Hamilton at hamilton@health.arizona.edu (621-4967) or Glenn Matchett-Morris at  matchettmorris@health.arizona.edu (621-3334).

The Dean of Students Office continues to create short movies addressing topics and issues that face our students. With the goal of providing information in a manner comfortable to students, and their parents, these movies provide a venue that delivers information in a quick, easy format. Our newest movies include: Breaking the Cycle of Hazing, Your child is arrested – now what?, A list of Resources for Survivors of Sexual Assault, Tailgating Tips, Safe Walk, and Safe Ride Ride Along. A complete list of UA SafeCats movies is available for viewing at the UASafeCats’ Channel.

As members of the university community, our goal is to help students succeed. When obstacles occur that threaten to prevent this outcome, our mission is to help students find the resources that will get them back on track. If you have any questions concerning where to direct a student, please contact our office. Working together we can ensure a culture of academic and personal success for our students.
