One Day at the UA Video Contest

What is a typical day for a UA student? The Dean of Students Office has asked that very question of University of Arizona students for the past 12 years and, with the support of the Marshall Foundation, given them the opportunity to share their point of view.

Previous to the video contest, the One Day at the UA was a yearly publication which offered a glimpse via photographs into what students encountered on a typical day at the University of Arizona. The project began as a campus wide exercise but five years ago switched to a collaboration with the School of Journalism. This collaboration increased student involvement to include editing, layout design, photography, and publication copy.

What resulted with these publications was the visual reflection of students’ experiences while attending The University of Arizona, illustrating everything from academics to animals, from living spaces to favorite places. This project became a tool to gauge the UA student experience and communicate that experience to the campus community.

With the realization that the internet and social media are a major source of news and entertainment for today’s students, the Dean of Students Office decide to follow that trend with the “One Day” theme.

In January, UA students were given the opportunity to create a short video depicting a typical day at the University of Arizona. Entries then posted their videos on the Dean of Student SafeCats facebook page where students, faculty and staff were encourage to “like” their favorite video.  A panel of judges consisting of faculty, department heads, students and community member determined the winning videos.

The top video was created by Kedi Xia, a junior in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. His video reflects a typical day in the life of Kai Hong Yeung, a graduate student in the College of Fine Arts’ music department.

The first runner up was awarded to Kenneth Brown, a pre-journalism freshman in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. And second runner up went to Natasha de Soysa, a sophomore studying psychology in the College of Science.

The submitted videos demonstrate that typical elements occur daily for all students. These include attending classes, hanging out with friends and completing homework assignments. However each student’s day also reveals unique aspects of student life, a uniqueness that enriches the “student experience” at the University of Arizona.
