Lindsey A. Chew
Lindsey A. Chew will graduate Summa Cum Laude from the Honors College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science, with minors in Spanish and Business Administration. Lindsey, a Flinn scholar, loves Arizona and is committed to Arizona’s future. Lindsey’s parents always taught her to value generosity and kindness, with medical philanthropy dominating their own charitable activities, this guided Lindsey’s exploration of medicine and translational research.
On her first day of college, Lindsey joined Dr. Khanna’s laboratory in the UA College of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology. She has contributed to drug discovery efforts identifying novel non-opioid pain therapeutics over the last four years. Lindsey has presented research findings at numerous international conferences, secured research and travel funding, and published as first/co-author eight times. Lindsey has been awarded the UA Spirit of Inquiry Research Grant, Willock Library Research Award, BIO5 Innovation Award, and Galileo Scholarship, among other recognitions for her research work.
Driven by her interest in medicine, Lindsey participated in a wide array of clinical experiences. In Banner University Medical Center’s emergency department, Lindsey enrolled qualifying patients in clinical trials. As part of the UA Elder Rehabilitation program (where many participants have Alzheimer’s/dementia), Lindsey supported her assigned partner’s quest for increased physical mobility and cognitive dexterity. As an active Guide Dogs for the Blind puppy raiser, Lindsey often socializes her puppies-in-training with patients, especially in the cardiovascular intensive care unit. With a puppy-in-training by her side, Lindsey also works with the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind’s Girl Scouts troop, supporting the girls’ introduction to service dogs.
Her many experiences motivated Lindsey to pursue a career merging clinical medicine with translational research. Lindsey will continue her education through Duke University School of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program, where she will obtain an MD/PhD. She plans to focus on clinical ophthalmology alongside vision-oriented research and aims to eventually join a school of medicine’s faculty as a physician-scientist.
Meagan Tran will graduate Magna Cum Laude from the Honors College with a degree in Biomedical Engineering and minors in Mathematics and Molecular & Cellular Biology. Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, she is the first woman in her family to graduate college in engineering.
At the University, Meagan explored her interest in science by conducting biomedical research in the Integrated Microsystem Laboratory under Drs. Yitshak Zohar and Linan Jiang. She developed new drug testing platforms known as “organs-on-a-chip” as a part of the Undergraduate Biology Research Program (UBRP).
Outside her research, Meagan found a passion in serving her community – a passion that led her to pursue medicine. She served as the Director of Administration for Engineering Student Council which represents students from 15 different engineering disciplines. Seeing the wide diversity of interests within engineering, Meagan realized the lack of a hands-on design club for biomedical students. She became a founding president for the Medical Device Club, forming partnerships with researchers to provide students engagement in developing medical technology. Through her work, Meagan received the S. Jack McDuff Scholarship, awarded to one outstanding engineering senior.
Meagan also volunteered in numerous organizations, working as a counselor at Crisis Text Line to provide support to those in a mental health crisis; facilitating support groups at Tu Nidito, a local family and children’s service for grief and bereavement; serving in a health clinic supporting South Tucson’s underserved population at La Clinica Amistad; and volunteering with the local Climber’s Association of Southern Arizona (she is an avid rock climber).
As a first-generation student growing up with public education, Meagan owes her achievements to the many educators who inspired her to excel in STEM. She will defer acceptance to the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine to serve in Teach for America.
Following graduation, Meagan will teach secondary biology in the Bay Area and help students succeed in STEM before embarking on a career in medicine in 2020.
