How to promote academic integrity

  • Define standards of academic integrity in your course syllabus.
  • Discuss your expectations of academic integrity in the first class session.
  • Create examination environments that discourage cheating.
  • Define your expectations about group collaboration versus individual work product.
  • Clearly describe your citation standards.
  • Randomly assign seating during exams.
  • Use multiple forms of a test for adjacent seats.
  • Bring extra proctors to large test sites.
  • Create a system to account for test materials and bluebooks.
  • Require students to show ID when submitting completed tests.
  • Define guidelines for "take home" examinations.
  • Discuss appropriate use of internet sources and social media (e.g., Facebook and Twitter).
  • Warn students that you may use plagarism checkers such as turnitin.com.

Include an academic integrity statement in your syllabus

Syllabus suggestions for success:

  • Be clear what style citation you expect students to use.
  • Be clear what written work should include citations (homework, drafts, final paper, etc.)
  • Be clear what type of collaboration or group work is allowed and what is not. Discuss items such as sharing notes, studying together, working on homework together, and tutoring.
  • Be clear about your expectations concerning the use of commercial note-taking lecture materials and social media.
  • Be clear what will happen if you suspect any integrity violations.

Sample Academic Integrity Statements

Academic Integrity at the University of Arizona is the principle that stands for honesty and ethical behavior in all homework, tests and assignments.  All students should act with personal integrity and help to create an environment in which all can succeed.
 
Dishonesty will not be tolerated in this course. This includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarizing, fabricating information or citations, facilitating acts of academic dishonesty by others, having unauthorized possession of examinations, submitting work of another person or work previously used without informing the instructor, or tampering with the academic work of other students.  Students who are found to be dishonest will be reported to the Dean of Students Office and receive a sanction, such as a failing grade on the assignment, exam, and/or in the course.  Students should refer to the UA Code of Academic Integrity if they have questions.  The Code can be found at:  https://deanofstudents.arizona.edu/codeofacademicintegrity

 
Violations of the UA Code of Academic Integrity are serious offenses at the University of Arizona.  As your instructor, I will deal with alleged violations in a fair and honest manner.  As students, you are expected to do your own work and follow class rules on all tests and assignments unless I indicate differently.  Alleged violations of the UA Code of Academic Integrity will be reported to the Dean of Students Office and will result in a sanction(s) (i.e., loss of credit on assignment, failure in class, suspension, etc.)  Students should review the UA Code of Academic Integrity which can be found at: https://deanofstudents.arizona.edu/codeofacademicintegrity
