DESCRIPTION

Exploring Global Communities: The CIELO Ghana program will expose students to a wide range of current and historical topics in Ghana. From the history of the slave trade to West African music and dance, this trip will leave the University of Arizona students with a comprehensive understanding of Ghana's past, present, and future.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Accra - Land in Accra, Ghana's capital.
  • Tamale - Visit the Bizung School of Music & Dance, an organization focused on creating change through music and arts education.
  • Tamale - Learn about Ghana's traditional music, drumming and dancing, and the influence of international music.
  • Tamale - Visit the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art, which focuses on developing and expanding the contemporary art scene in Ghana.
  • Mole - Tour Mole National Park, the crown jewel of Ghana's national park system and the largest wildlife reserve in Ghana.
  • Mole - Learn about the biodiversity in Mole National Park.
  • Mole - Learn the traditions and customs, such as weaving and making shea butter. 
  • Kumasi - The capital of the Ashanti region. 
  • Kumasi - Visit the Kintampo Waterfalls.
  • Kumasi - Visit the palace museum at the Manhyia Palace, which is the residence of the chief of the Ashantis.
  • Kumasi - Visit local Ashanti villages to learn about kente weaving traditions and try your hand at weaving.
  • Cape Coast - Tour Cape Coast castle, a UNESCO World Heritage and home to a museum on slavery and European colonization. 
  • Cape Coast - Visit the University of Cape Coast, interact with students, and learn about Ghana's tertiary education system.
  • Cape Coast - Cooking workshop and lessons.
  • Accra - Learn about Ghana's independence.
